The decline of honey-bee populations is a well-publicized phenomenon, yet the status of native bees is little known. In 2001, Sam Droege launched a pilot program of the first survey of North America's native bee population. Calvert County Natural Resources staff and volunteers have helped to collect bees from a wide variety of habitats in the County, which has resulted in at least six new state records! Sam will share his amazing close-up photographs while discussing the importance of native bees.

See Sam's photography of native bees.

This program is supported by the Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust.

Speaker: Sam Droege, Biologist, USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center
