These programs offer adults, and older teens, and opportunity to explore and learn about the natural world.  Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Program Fees: Unless noted programs are free for members; $8 per person for nonmember

Some programs charge slightly more due to materials and supplies.

Reservations are required in advance.

From invasive plant removal, to routine garden care, to maintaining the nature play space and trails - there is always something to be done.  Volunteers must be able to perform moderately strenuous physical tasks.

    Salamander Study Training Day

    For adults and families with older children (age 9 and up) with adult participation.  Not suitable for young children.

    Come find out more about our local salamanders and this volunteer program which helps to keep tabs on their population at Flag Ponds Park.  Join the naturalist in getting the traps ready for the fall season.  Bring work gloves and wear clothes that can get dirty.

    Enjoy the convenience of collecting data at home, while expanding our monarch conservation efforts. Learn about the monarch citizen science projects we're working on and practice tagging and other data collection techniques that you will use at home.

    Learn more about Calvert Nature Society and celebrate our fantastic volunteers. After dinner, listen to a lively talk by Kyle Rambo, natural resources manager at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, on reptiles and amphibians of Southern Maryland

    Free event. Dinner will be BBQ and there will be vegetarian options.

    Kyle Rambo's lecture is supported by the Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust.

    A special opportunity for our Calvert Stewards volunteers. 

    Fall migration will begin for many raptor species in late August. We will head up to Washington Monument State Park to observe raptors migrating along the Appalachian Mountains and submit our data to the Washington Monument Hawk Watch. We will meet at Kings Landing Park then travel to the park in Boonsboro, MD.

    Location: Meet at Kings Landing Park.   We will then travel to the Washington Monument State Park in the county vans.

    Battle Creek Cypress Swamp is a beautiful park home to lots of unique plants and animals. Unfortunately the area along Grays and Sixes roads are not as pretty due to the litter from passing motorists. Help us beautify the park by collecting the litter and separating it for recycling. Afterwards we will take you on a tour through the nature center and get an up close view at some of our exhibit animals.

    Ever wondered what owls live in Maryland? Come to our owl banding station and learn about what owls could be living in your backyard as well as the migratory Saw-Whet Owls we are studying. We will have a live owl to see and maybe a chance to see a wild Saw Whet Owl.

    Come on a Bald Eagle adventure with us! We will travel by van to the Conowingo dam and Susquehanna State Park to see the dozens, sometimes hundreds, of Bald Eagles that congregate there. We will observe the eagles, hike some trails, and see historical features that the state park has to offer.

    Bring lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have them, also available to borrow.

    Eagles, ducks, geese and more! We will enjoy a leisurely two mile hike as we visit the swamp, ponds and beach to learn visual and auditory identification techniques.

    Dress for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes, and bring binoculars if you have them. Binoculars will be available to borrow.

    For Current Volunteers (Adults only)

    From eagles to owls and ducks to geese who knows what we could see as we go birding at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. This area is a major stayover and migration stop for many birds along the east coast. 

    This trip is open to Calvert Stewards who have volutneered during the past year. Thanks for everything you do!

    Location: Meet at Kings Landing Park.   We will then travel to the eastern shore in the county vans.
