Special Events and Programs for Adults

These programs offer adults, and older teens, and opportunity to explore and learn about the natural world.  Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Program Fees: Unless noted programs are free for members; $8 per person for nonmember

Some programs charge slightly more due to materials and supplies.

Reservations are required in advance.

    Are you interested in helping to monitor the American Kestrel nest boxes? This training will teach you how to properly monitor these nests as well as American Kestrel natural history. We will meet at Battle Creek Cypress Swamp and travel to an off-site nest location.

    Join other park volunteers for this nighttime adventure into the swamp at Flag Ponds.  We will wade into the swamp and with luck find spring peepers calling and spy on other swamp animals, like salamanders, in the water.

    After a short presentation about our Prothonotary Warbler Study, volunteers will borrow some waders and trek into the swamp to learn the nest box locations and prepare them for the season.  Interested volunteers can monitor them as little as once or as many as 12 times between April and July.

    Since we have a limited number of waders up to size 12, please let us know your shoe size when you register so that we can try to have enough waders for everyone.

    Volunteers are needed to help our staff with the maintenance and upkeep of the trails and gardens around Battle Creek Nature Center. From invasive plant removal, to routine garden care, to maintaining the nature play space and trails - there is always something to be done.  Volunteers must be able to perform moderately strenuous physical tasks.

    For adults, although teens 16 years and older may attend.

    Hellen Creek Preserve harbors part of an isolated stand of eastern hemlock, the southern-most in Maryland. We’ll keep our eye open for the spring wildflowers and songbirds, including some more characteristic of the Appalachian forest in western Maryland.  

    Be prepared for some difficult terrain, with some up and down and not all on trails; steep in places and wet in others.

    Suggestions: Wear long pants and sleeves, good hiking shoes/boots, some areas may be muddy. Bring water bottle, snacks and/or lunch. Optional: Field guides, 10x hand lens, binoculars.

    Interested in knowing the names of the wonderful wildflowers you encounter in forest and field? Then take this class where you’ll learn to “key-out” local plants using the popular Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide. Other field guides can be used, but the instruction will focus on the terminology and methodology of Newcomb's. 

    Please bring a hand lens, lunch, and water. Please consider buying Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide before the program and reading the beginning sections. A limited number are for sale at the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp.

    A few copies of the guide and extra lenses will be available to borrow

    Are you interested in helping out with our kayak trips? This two day training course will cover getting boats to the water, paddle strokes, rescues and routes for our trips. Volunteers need to be able to attend both training days. While this program is free we expect volunteers to help with two trips during the following season.

    Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and participate in both days of the training.
