In 1986, Calvert County received a generous gift of land from the estate of Bennett O. Hughes. As a condition of the gift, the county agreed that 196-acre property would be maintained as a tree farm to demonstrate sustainable forest management.

Wildlife Management

In cooperation with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, limited hunting is available at Biscoe Gray Heritage Farm, Flag Ponds Nature Park and Hughes Tree Farm.  More information

Special Hunt Days Planned

In  partnership with the Chesapeake Longbeards Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, we are offering three special hunt days aimed at introducing non-traditional audiences to hunting in a safe and controlled environment. 

• Nov. 11, 2024 – Veterans Hunt: This event is dedicated to honoring veterans, offering them an opportunity to experience hunting as a form of outdoor recreation and therapeutic activity.
•  Dec. 27, 2024 – Ladies Hunt: This event is designed to encourage and support women in the sport of hunting, with the goal of fostering interest and participation in wildlife conservation and management.
• April 21, 2025 – Youth Turkey Hunt: This event aims to introduce young people to hunting, focusing on safety, education and conservation practices to inspire the next generation of responsible hunters.
