  Discover how one remarkable species helps shape the Chesapeake Bay. Join Maryland Master Naturalist and science illustrator Adam Aris Candelaria for an engaging presentation exploring the history, life cycle, and incredible ecological importance of the Eastern oyster.

  Through original illustrations, storytelling, and fascinating science, you'll learn how oysters build reefs that provide habitat for hundreds of species, filter and improve water quality, protect shorelines, and support one of the Bay's most iconic ecosystems. Adam will also share how scientists, watermen, volunteers, and communities are working together to restore oyster populations throughout the Chesapeake Bay.

  Perfect for nature enthusiasts and lifelong learners who wants to better understand one of the Chesapeake's most important keystone species.

  About Adam Aris Candelaria: He is a Maryland Master Naturalist, science illustrator, author, poet, graphic designer, Certified Baltimore TreeKeeper, and Weed Warrior based in Baltimore, Maryland. He is passionate about helping people of all ages discover the wonder of nature through art, storytelling, and hands-on exploration.

  Adam is the author and illustrator of The Garden Part 1, a science comic that brings the concepts of producers, consumers, decomposers, and energy flow to life for young readers. He is also the author of the poem "Where the Pavement Hums," which explores the connections between nature and Baltimore City.

  Adam is currently developing an illustrated educational series about the Eastern oyster and its vital role in the Chesapeake Bay. The stories explore oyster history, life cycle, ecosystem engineering, water filtration, reef habitat, and ongoing restoration efforts, helping readers understand why oysters are one of the Bay's most important species.

  His work combines scientific accuracy, engaging storytelling, and original artwork to make ecology accessible, inspiring curiosity, environmental stewardship, and a lifelong appreciation for nature. Through his presentations, Adam blends science, live illustration, and storytelling to help audiences of all ages discover the hidden wonders of the natural world.

  This free lecture series, supported by a generous grant from Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust (CPNHT), is a year-long educational initiative is designed to engage Calvert County residents with accessible, informative, and inspiring presentations on environmental topics relevant to Southern Maryland. This series will feature expert-led, one-hour lectures at local locations such as public libraries, community nature centers, and non-profit organizations that would be willing to host public participation. Each lecture will be free and open to the public, aiming to foster environmental stewardship and community-based environmental learning.

  In addition to the lectures, the events will showcase local research projects and assessments relating to the natural sciences that have taken place in Southern Maryland – especially the small grant projects that CPNHT supports as well as other volunteer based activities that are contributing to the improvement of the environmental health of our local ecosystem. These showcases would be in in short presentation format, held to a 30 minute length and presented before the primary speaker presentation.

  For youth ages 5 to 15 years with their accompanying adult. 

  Cast a line and discover the fun of fishing! This hands-on learn-to-fish program introduces youth ages 5 to 15 to the basics of freshwater fishing in a safe, supportive and fun environment. Participants will learn how to safely use fishing equipment, and practice casting techniques, along with tips for ethical angling and catch-and-release. Then they will try their hand at making their first catch. No experience is needed, just curiosity and a love of the outdoors. All equipment is provided. Caregivers will need to remain with their young anglers.

  Ahoy, mateys! Gather ‘round the fire for a swashbucklin’ evening of pirate tales, tall legends, and a few mysterious happenings from the high seas. In honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day, guests are encouraged to come dressed in their finest pirate gear—eye patches, tricorn hats, and all! We’ll spin yarns under the stars while roasting marshmallows over the campfire. So grab your crew and prepare for a night of adventure, laughter, and just a hint of mischief!
  

  What to bring: wear you best pirate garb and bring a blanket or camp chairs to sit on.

  6:45 – 7:15 PM: Premiere of the documentary film "The Last Osprey" directed and produced by William McKeever. He also produced the “Biggest Little Fish That You Have Never Seen”, a film that we were fortunate to premiere three years ago at the Drum Point Club. Cautionary note – the film contains graphic images of sick and deceased Ospreys including nestlings.

  7:15 – 8:30 PM: Greg Kearns Presentation and Discussion - “Current Status of the Chesapeake Bay Ospreys”

  Greg Kearns is a Senior Park Naturalist for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission at the Patuxent River Park. He is an expert on the wetland ecology of the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River with over 40 years of experience researching Ospreys and other species. He has been instrumental in the installation of over 100 Osprey nesting platforms and has banded over 5000 Ospreys. He was named the Conservationist of the Year in 2006 by the Maryland Dept. of Natural Resources and in 2017 was awarded the National Wetlands Conservation Award.

  The Drum Point Club will be open to the public for this special event Light Refreshments will be provided.

Trace how the land has changed over time—from its agricultural roots to the protected natural space we enjoy today. This engaging hike offers a deeper understanding of the connection between history, land use and the natural world.   The Calvert Marine Museum Education Department, through the efforts of Alice Merkel, was able to obtain a grant from the Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust in order to create a Butterfly Waystation to support local pollinators and assist the Monarch Butterflies in their annual migration. By planting of native Milkweed Common plants and other native plants, it is our hope that this will create new opportunities for educational interpretation to visitors to the site about the importance of pollinators to the greater Chesapeake Bay region.

  An experienced museum professional in both collections and education, Alice Merkel, is a senior Educational Interpreter at the Calvert Marine Museum.

  Prepare to be amazed as we welcome the Southern Maryland Astronomical Society (SMAS) to Kings Landing Park for an evening of public stargazing. SMAS will bring their telescopes and be our guides for this adventure through the night skies. 

  What to bring: Dress warmly and keep in mind the changeable weather at this time of the year, wear sturdy shoes and a flashlight to walk to and from observation site (<1/4 mile).   Identifying hawks, falcons and other day time raptors can be difficult but they are wonderful birds to observe.  We'll have a short classroom presentation on how to identify these birds by their appearance, calls, silhouettes and behaviors.  Afterwards we will take a trip in the county van so we can test out our skills near some local farms. 

  This workshop is a great training opportunity if you are interested in helping with the Calvert Stewards Winter Raptor Road Surveys Project.

  Join us for a magical night under the stars as we look out for the Loenids Meteor Shower to light up the sky.✨ Bring a blanket or camp chairs and find a cozy spot in the open field for the best view. We will have a brief introduction to the night sky and meteor viewing tips, then time to sit back and take in the skyscape. We’ll have a campfire going and marshmallows provided—just bring your sense of wonder.

  Homemade bayberry candles have been a holiday tradition since the 17th century and are said to bring good luck, wealth, and prosperity to those who burn them. Together we will learn about and participate in the process of creating candles from the naturally occurring wax of the bayberry bush. One lucky participant will win a 100% bayberry wax candle to take home.

  In this 4-part teen homeschool series, we will explore the Chesapeake Bay and its surrounding beaches through hands-on, outdoor investigation. Each session will take place outside as we hike shoreline trails, examine coastal habitats, and observe seasonal changes in the Bay ecosystem. Together, we’ll identify common plants and animals, investigate water quality and tidal patterns, and build practical field skills while deepening our understanding of this unique estuarine environment.

  Because each session builds on the last, participants are expected to attend all four classes.
